Seyit Onbaşı 1909 yılında orduya katılır ve Balkan Savaşı'ında yer aldıktan sonra, Birinci Dünya Savaşı'nın başlamasıyla Çanakkale Cephesi'nde topçu er olarak görev alır.
18 Mart 1915 tarihindeki Deniz Harekâtı'nın başlaması ile, işgal donanması Çanakkale boğazına girmeye teşebbüs eder. Türk topçu birliklerinin üstün başarımı ve Albay Cevat yönetimindeki Nusrat Mayın Gemisi'nin etkili çalışmaları sayesinde düşman donanmasına büyük hasar verilir. Bu esnada batmakta olan Fransız savaş gemisi Bouvet'in yardımına İngiliz Ocean ve Fransız İrresistible gemileri gelir. Ancak Seyit Onbaşı'nın bulunduğu Rumeli Mecidiye Tabyası'ndaki vinç arızalanır. Bunun üzerine her biri 276 kg olan top mermilerini besmele çekerek, üç kez kendi namluya yerleştirir ve İngiliz Ocean gemisinin mürettebatı tarafından terkedilmesi ile sonuçlanacak hasara yol açar. 1918 tarihinde köyüne döndükten sonra, eski uğraşı (savaştan önceki işi) olan ormancılık ve kömürcülüğe devam edip, 1934 yılındaki soyadı yasası ile Çabuk soyadını edinir. |
